Heirloom Meals: Savoring Yesterday's Traditions Today

Canelazo (Spiced cinnamon rum drink)

3 cups water
2/3 cup light brown sugar
2/3 cup dark brown sugar
1 lime’s juice
1 pinch of salt
1 tsp whole cloves
4-6 cinnamon sticks
½ cup orange juice
4 oz aguardiente (or to taste); can also use rum

Bring the water, sugar, lime juice, salt, cinnamon sticks and cloves to a boil.  Let simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.  Remove from the heat and stir in the orange juice.  Add the aguardiente or rum.  Then reheat it without boiling (If it boils the alcohol will be cooked out).  Strain and serve hot.
